Abstract

Background: Patients on peritoneal dialysis require knowledge about the care to be applied during renal therapy that contribute to maintaining health status and preventing complications such as infections, the above motivates the implementation of Dorothea Orem theory to a patient in management with peritoneal dialysis.

Purpose: to describe the educational intervention of nursing based on the theory of Dorothe Orem in a patient with peritoneal dialysis.

Case presentation: Intervention performed on a 61-year-old male patient with a history of Chronic Kidney Disease, according to the Orem Theory, developed in seven phases. A home visit is made 15 days after starting dialysis at home, the physical infrastructure being verified, its cement room where it was dialyzed and slept, it was observed very neat and in order as indicated by the protocol, its hand washing was done correctly, the table was cleaned by the technique in a correct way and without Contamination of his hands, despite his limitation, in this way he did not require the help of his wife, after a year the patient continues in peritoneal dialysis therapy without presenting an episode of infection.

Discussion and conclusion: The nursing intervention on educational support in people with different chronic diseases gives a clear vision of the importance of this activity in positive changes in the control of degenerative diseases.
