Abstract

Context: Renal diseases represent a public health problem in Latin America. Nephrology specialty programs in the region show a high degree of heterogeneity in their curricular structure and the competencies of the professional profile are not properly explained.

Objective: To clearly define the graduate profile of the Nephrology specialty, specifying the competencies that the future nephrologist should develop. This work proposes a set of minimum competencies for the training of nephrologists in the region, incorporating the methodology of construction of integrated professional competencies.

Methodology: By following the curricular approach of integrated professional competencies, the graduate profile was organized and constructed based on the identification of social needs in health care in Latin America. In collegial work, the social needs of the region were identified, which were translated into training needs and, based on them, integrated professional competencies were developed to meet them, which were organized into: professional, technical-instrumental and sociocultural competencies.

Results: Based on the social needs identified, eight professional competencies were developed and organized, four technical-instrumental, five sociocultural and one transversal, from which the practical, theoretical and formative knowledge that will integrate the educational program was derived.

Conclusions: The methodology for the construction of integrated professional competencies, considering international standards, offers an opportunity to define the graduate profile of the future nephrologist, based on a curricular approach that links the needs of care with the contents of the training of specialists.
