Abstract

Context: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent and negatively impacts quality of life. Treatment adherence and family support are key factors in clinical management.

Objective: To evaluate the association between treatment adherence and family functioning in patients undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Methodology: Correlational-comparative, cross-sectional study. Sample: 75 patients (40 on hemodialysis and 35 on peritoneal dialysis). Instruments: therapeutic adherence scale (TAS) and Family Functioning Assessment Scale (FACES IV).

Results: 94.7 % (n = 71) demonstrated good adherence, and 96 % (n = 72) showed family functionality. Most participants had support from more than one person. No significant association was found between adherence and functionality (p = 0.154). Likewise, there were no significant differences in adherence (p = 0.075) or functionality (p = 0.551) across different RRT modalities. The mean age of the participants was 59.21 years, with a standard deviation (SD) of ± 15.420 years.

Discussion: Descriptively, the high levels of therapeutic adherence and family functioning suggest favorable conditions for disease management. However, the characteristics of the sample and certain methodological limitations may have restricted the detection of associations between the variables studied.

Conclusions: Although no significant association was identified, existing literature suggests that family support positively influences treatment adherence. Further research is recommended.
